SAFETY TIPS

The below tips are intended to provide some of the “basics” of gas grill safety and not as a complete list of all safety precautions you should observe.  As part of each service call/repair the technician will demonstrate the proper operation of your grill and provide you with some basic safety tip information.

  • Before lighting the gas grill, be sure to follow proper Leak Test procedures on the grill: Use a Leak Detector Solution (or a solution of 50% water and 50% liquid dish detergent) to check each gas connection for leaks. Tighten any leaky connections. Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks!
  • When lighting a gas grill, always open the lid to prevent a fire flash from gas build-up.
  • If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply immediately. Extinguish any open flames. Check for gas leaks as described above.
  • Do not bring LP gas cylinders indoors or into an enclosed space such as a garage or basement.
  • Never attach or disconnect a LP cylinder, or move or alter gas fittings when the grill is in operation or is hot.
  • Never use an LP cylinder if it shows signs of: dents, gouges, bulges, fire damage, corrosion, leakage, excessive rust or other forms of visual external damage; it may be hazardous and should be checked by a liquid propane supplier.
  • When you have your LP cylinder refilled, have your supplier check for damage, rust or leaks.
  • After filling, take your cylinder home immediately. Do not place the cylinder in the trunk and keep your vehicle well ventilated with the cylinder valve closed and plugged or capped. Do not leave the LP gas tank in your car.
  • The LP gas cylinder should be removed from the grill when it is not in use; this prevents children accidentally turning controls on.
  • When changing LP gas cylinders, ensure that the valves are turned to the off position. Do not use aerosols around the grill, as these may be flammable.
  • When opening your LP gas tank valve, it is only necessary to open the valve with one turn so that you can turn it off in a hurry if you need to. There is no advantage to opening the tank valve all the way open.
  • Always use or store LP cylinders in an upright, vertical position. Store them outdoors away from sources of ignition.
  • If there is a significant and uncontrollable release of gas or a fire, call the fire department immediately and move all people and pets away from the unit.
  • Always follow all of the manufacturer's instructions and keep written materials and manuals in a safe, accessible place.
  • Always have a personal fire extinguisher available near your grill. A bucket of sand or a garden hose should be near if you don't have a fire extinguisher. Baking soda can be used to control a grease fire.
  • Grills are designed for outdoor use only. Never grill in your trailer, tent, house, garage, or any enclosed area.
  • When using a grill, be sure all parts of the unit are firmly in place.
  • The grill should be sited on a stable, even surface, that is well ventilated and not underneath hanging branches or a roof. Be aware of wind-blown sparks.
  • Do not lean over the grill when igniting the burners or cooking.
  • If a burner doesn't ignite, turn off the gas. Keep the grill lid open and wait five minutes before trying to light it again.
  • If the burners go out during operation, turn all gas valves to OFF. Open the lid and wait five minutes before attempting to relight, using lighting instructions.
  • The grill should have an adult by it at all times while it is in use, and while it is cooling.
  • Keep children away from the hot grill and don’t place the grill where children are going to play.
  • Never pour an accelerant such as lighter fluid or gasoline on/in the grill.
  • Should electrically operated accessories (i.e. rotisseries, etc.) be used, be sure they are properly grounded in accordance with local codes. Electrical cords should be placed away from walkways. Use long-handled grill utensils to avoid burns and splatters.
  • Do not wear loose or baggy clothing, wear a non flammable apron.
  • Make sure the grill burner controls and LP Gas Tank valve are turned off when not in use.
  • Make sure the gas grill is shut off and cooled off before covering your grill after use.
