Chimney Cleaning

What's really happening inside your Chimney?

Your chimney, like most chimneys, probably appears to be in fine condition on the outside. But let's take a look at what really counts in chimney operation...the inside…

When we look at the interior of a chimney, there may be a number of imperfect conditions. Pieces of the clay liner may be missing, there can be cracks in the clay liner (Some older chimneys might not even have a liner.) Mortar and bricks can be loose and failing. And there may be excessive buildup of combustible creosote on the flue walls when a Chimney is not regularly cleaned.

These conditions may be the result of a number of possible causes including:

*Flue fires that occur when burning wood

*Improperly vented furnace or misused stoves

    *Poor chimney construction

*Excessive moisture resulting from missing or broken Chimney Cap

    *Worn or Cracked Crown

    *Poor condition of Flashing

*Interior corrosion and general aging of the Chimney

With continued use of any chimney, any or all of these conditions could lead to loss of property or life.

It happens thousands of times every year - chimney defects resulting in home fires.

It doesn't take much to start a home fire...a spark flitting through a crack in the chimney wall into the attic...a chimney ember igniting a creosote fire which then climbs the full height of the chimney "looking" for a breech in the chimney wall...or simply excessive heat reflected through chimney walls when a clay liner is missing or damaged.

Fortunately, the problems of a deteriorating chimney can be corrected without completely rebuilding your chimney!

Most masonry chimneys are constructed with an inner liner of clay tiles. The purpose of this liner is to keep the heat of flue gases inside the chimney so the chimney can't overheat the nearby combustible material, such as the framing and walls of your house, and possibly cause a fire. The liner also keeps carbon monoxide, moisture, smoke, creosote, and other products of combustion from seeping through the bricks and mortar of your chimney and leaking into your home. As you can see, a secure lining system is crucial to the safety and well-being of your home and family.

This brings us to a chimney relining system. What is it? It’s Simple…. It's what you need when the original clay tile liner was either never installed, or when the tile lining cracks, crumbles and deteriorates over time. Water damage, chimney fires, or just age can cause the deterioration of your clay liner. When that happens, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) code 211 says it must be replaced.

The most popular, effective and economical way to reline your chimney is with UL listed, stainless steel relining pipe. We use a Lining System that has been used for over 20 years in chimneys throughout North America and is the industry leader.

ASHEKICKERS CHIMNEY SERVICE (a Division of BBQ Renew) will restore and revitalize your chimney by putting insulated stainless steel between your chimney flue and the defects in your chimney walls. This will add to the safety of your home and family. And it will increase the resale value of your home!

We use only the finest stainless steel chimney liners with construction that is unsurpassed in strength and protection. We use Liners that have been tested and listed by Underwriters Laboratories to their highest heat test standard.

And for wood-burning applications, Chimney Relining Systems offers a warranty you can even pass on to the next owner of your home.

We can reline virtually any chimney configuration you may have - from single, straight flues to multiple, connected flues with bends and size changes.

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs after enough inhalation of carbon monoxide(CO). Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas, but, being colorless, odorless, tasteless, and initially non-irritating, it is very difficult for people to detect. Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic matter due to insufficient oxygensupply to enable complete oxidation to carbon dioxide (CO2). It is often produced in domestic or industrial settings by older motor vehicles and other gasoline-powered tools, heaters, and cooking equipment. Exposures at 100 ppm or greater can be dangerous to human health.

Symptoms of mild acute poisoning include lightheadedness, confusion, headachesvertigo, and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart, and even death. Following acute poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman. Chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can lead to depressionconfusion, and memory loss. Carbon monoxide mainly causes adverse effects in humans by combining with hemoglobin to formcarboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in the blood. This prevents oxygen binding to hemoglobin, reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, leading tohypoxia. Additionally, myoglobin and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase are thought to be adversely affected. Carboxyhemoglobin can revert to hemoglobin, but the recovery takes time because the HbCO complex is fairly stable.

Treatment of poisoning largely consists of administering 100% oxygen or providinghyperbaric oxygen therapy, although the optimum treatment remains controversial.[2] Oxygen works as an antidote as it increases the removal of carbon monoxide from hemoglobin, in turn providing the body with normal levels of oxygen. The prevention of poisoning is a significant public health issue. Domestic carbon monoxide poisoning can be prevented by early detection with the use of household carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common type of fatal poisoning in many countries.[3] Historically, it was also commonly used as a method to commit suicide, usually by deliberately inhaling the exhaust fumes of a running car engine. Modern automobiles, even with electronically-controlled combustion andcatalytic converters, can still produce levels of carbon monoxide which will kill if enclosed within a garage or if the tailpipe is obstructed (for example, by snow) and exhaust gas cannot escape normally. Carbon monoxide poisoning has also been implicated as the cause of apparent haunted houses; symptoms such as delirium and hallucinations have led people suffering poisoning to think they have seen ghosts or to believe their house is haunted.[4]
